How Israel sets its time

A Friday, not a Sunday

Israel's Time Determination Law fixes the clock changes. Summer time starts at two in the morning on the Friday before the last Sunday in March. It ends at two in the morning on the last Sunday in October. The government's bill followed the advice of a committee the Interior Minister appointed. So Israel moves its clocks two days before Europe in spring, and on the same Sunday in autumn.

Once tied to Yom Kippur
150days of summer time an earlier version of the law required
Israel's summer time once ended on the Saturday night before Yom Kippur. That night follows the Hebrew calendar, so the end date moved from year to year. Before that rule, the law asked only for at least 150 days of summer time a year.

The same letters as India and Ireland
ISTalso stands for India's time and Ireland's summer time
Israel's standard time carries the code IST. India uses the same three letters for its one time zone, IST, UTC+5:30. Ireland uses them for its summer time, IST, UTC+1. The keepers of the time zone database warn that the code is ambiguous for this reason. The man who chose it for Israel wanted a code named for the country, not for Jerusalem.
