Which time zone each US state uses

The 50 states use six time zones. From east to west they are Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian. Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year. The rest of the country changes its clocks twice a year.

Places that do not change their clocks

Hawaii and most of Arizona stay on standard time all year. Arizona does so by state law. The territories in the table do not change their clocks either.

The Navajo Nation is the exception inside Arizona. It changes its clocks, to keep the same time as its communities in Utah and New Mexico.

The six US time zones

Each row gives a zone's standard and daylight time and the time there now. Arizona and the Aleutian Islands have rows of their own. Each shares a standard time with its neighbor but not its clock changes.

How many time zones does the US have?

Six zones cover the 50 states. The other answers you will see are not wrong. They count different things.

The contiguous states
4time zones
The 48 states between Canada and Mexico use four zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific.
All 50 states
6time zones
Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian time bring the count to six. This is the number this page uses.
Federal law
9time zones
The law names nine. The extra three cover the territories: Atlantic, Samoa and Chamorro time.
The tz database
29zone entries
The tz database, the list software uses to convert times, has 29 entries for the 50 states. Most of them record past differences, not present ones. Indiana alone has 8.

When the clocks change in the United States

Every place that changes its clocks does so on the same two days, at the same local time. The change reaches the east coast first and the Aleutian Islands last.

Questions about US time zones

What time zone is Phoenix in?

Phoenix is on Mountain Standard Time, MST, UTC-7, all year. Arizona does not change its clocks, so Phoenix keeps the same time as Denver in winter and the same time as Los Angeles in summer. The Navajo Nation, in the same state, does change its clocks.

Is Texas in one time zone?

No. Most of Texas, including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin, is on Central Time, CST, UTC-6 in winter. El Paso and Hudspeth counties in the far west are on Mountain Time, 1 hour behind the rest of the state. Both parts change their clocks on the same days, so the gap holds all year.

What time zone is Florida in?

Most of Florida is on Eastern Time, EST, UTC-5 in winter, including Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa and Tallahassee. The western panhandle is on Central Time, 1 hour behind the rest of the state. It lies west of the Apalachicola River and includes Pensacola and Panama City. Both parts change their clocks on the same days.

What time zone is Nashville in?

Nashville is on Central Time, CST, UTC-6 in winter, and so is Memphis. Tennessee is split between two zones. Knoxville, Chattanooga and the rest of the east are on Eastern Time, 1 hour ahead of Nashville. Both parts change their clocks on the same days, so the gap holds all year.

Why does Indiana have so many time zone entries?

Indiana's counties changed their clocks at different times over the years, and the tz database keeps a separate entry for each history. Today all of Indiana is on Eastern or Central Time, and every county changes its clocks on the same days. The extra entries matter to software, not to people planning a call.
