Why clocks change

Daylight saving time is the part of the year when clocks are set ahead, usually by one hour.

The aim is more daylight in the evening during the warmer months. Mornings get less daylight in exchange.

Each government sets its own rules. That is why the dates differ from one country to the next.

South of the equator the pattern is reversed. In Sydney, clocks go forward in October and back in April.

Most of them. Of the 247 countries and territories on this site, 179 keep one time all year. They include India, China and Japan. Most countries in Africa and in South America do not change their clocks either.

Why did my device change its clock on the wrong date?

A device changes on the right date only if its time zone rules are up to date. Phones and computers follow a copy of the time zone database. Governments change their rules, and the database is updated to match. Devices get those updates from their software makers. A device that has missed an update can change on an old date.

How these figures were made

Every figure on this page comes from the IANA time zone database, release 2026e.

Each of the 312 time zones on this site was checked for changes in its UTC offset during 2026.

A date counts once, however many time zones change on it. Dates and times are local to each place.

The list of places that stopped changing starts in 2024, the first year of the rules this site keeps.

The figures update when the site moves to a new release of the database.
