How Namibia keeps its time

A law sets the time
CATthe zone database's name for Namibia's time
The Namibian Time Act sets the country's standard time. In the Act's words, it is "two hours in advance of the Greenwich Mean Time". The Act gives that time no name. The time zone database calls it Central Africa Time, CAT, as it does for Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Winter time, now repealed
1 hthe step back each winter under the old law
Namibia used to set its clocks back one hour each winter. An earlier law split the year into a summer period and a winter period. Winter time ran from the first Sunday of April to the first Sunday of September. A later law repealed that law and fixed one time for the whole year.

Questions about time in Namibia

What time zone is Namibia in?

Namibia keeps one time zone for the whole country, Central Africa Time, CAT, UTC+2. Windhoek, Rundu, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Oshakati all show the same time. A law, the Namibian Time Act, sets the time. The clocks do not change during the year, so the time is the same in every season.

Does Namibia still have winter time?

No. Namibia stays on CAT, UTC+2 all year, and its clocks do not change. Under an older law, the clocks went back one hour each April and forward again each September. A later law repealed that law. The gap with Europe and North America still shifts, because they change their clocks.

Is Namibia on the same time as South Africa?

Yes. Johannesburg is on the same time as Namibia all year, because neither country changes its clocks. South Africa calls its time South African Standard Time, SAST. The time zone database calls Namibia's time Central Africa Time, CAT. The two names stand for the same clock time.

What is the time difference between Namibia and Germany?

Berlin is 1 hour behind Namibia in the European winter. In the European summer, Germany moves its clocks forward and Namibia does not, so the two show the same time. Germany sends Namibia more tourists than any other country outside Africa, so this gap matters for many trips.

What is the time difference between Namibia and India?

India is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of Namibia all year, because neither country changes its clocks. The gap does not move with the seasons. So a call time agreed once between Windhoek and Mumbai or Delhi holds in every month of the year.
