How Pakistan keeps its time
- The official time
- NMIP
- In Islamabad, the National Metrology Institute of Pakistan maintains and sends out Pakistan Standard Time. The work falls to its Time and Frequency Metrology Division. Its clock is kept in step with a caesium frequency standard. Through GPS, it is also kept in step with the United States' national standards laboratory.
- Two codes for one time
- PKT
- Government papers and the national timekeeper write Pakistan Standard Time as PST. Those are the same letters as Pacific time in the US. Most clocks, phones and time zone databases show PKT instead, and so does this site.
- The half hour in the old law
- 30 min
- Pakistan's standard time law was written with the country five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich. That figure was a leftover from before partition. Pakistan's clocks have long run half an hour earlier than that. Both houses of Parliament have now passed an amendment striking out the words "and one-half".
- Daylight saving, tried and dropped
- 0
- Pakistan moved its clocks forward for three summers, at least once to meet a shortfall of electricity. Then another summer of it was planned. The prime minister told the National Assembly that the government would honour the House's view. It would leave the clocks alone. They have not changed since.
Questions about time in Pakistan
What time zone is Pakistan in?
All of Pakistan keeps one time zone, Pakistan Standard Time, PKT, UTC+5. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar show the same time all year. The National Metrology Institute of Pakistan keeps the official time in Islamabad. Its documents write the code as PST.
Does Pakistan have daylight saving time?
No. Pakistan stays on PKT, UTC+5 all year. It tried moving its clocks forward for three summers but dropped the practice. So the gap with the Gulf does not move. The gap with Europe and North America shifts by an hour twice a year, when they change their clocks.
What is the time difference between Pakistan and India?
India is 30 minutes ahead of Pakistan all year. Neither country moves its clocks for summer. So a clock in Amritsar, just across the border, always reads that much later than one in Lahore.
What is the time difference between Pakistan and the UAE?
Dubai is 1 hour behind Pakistan all year. Riyadh is 2 hours behind Pakistan, also all year. None of the three countries changes its clocks. So a call time agreed once with family in the Gulf holds in every season.
What is the time difference between Pakistan and the UK?
London is 5 hours behind Pakistan in the British winter. The UK moves its clocks forward for summer and Pakistan does not, so the gap shrinks by an hour. A call at the start of the London working day reaches Karachi in the early afternoon.
