How Sudan's clocks have moved

Back an hour from East Africa Time
1 htaken off Sudan's clocks at the most recent change
Sudan's clocks ran on East Africa Time, EAT, UTC+3, before their most recent change. A post to the time zone database's mailing list set out the switch to CAT, UTC+2. The post put the change at midnight, at the very start of the day. That took the clocks back one hour. The database's notes mention a scanned Arabic copy of Cabinet Resolution No. 352, sent as an email attachment.

60minutes added to Sudan's clocks at that earlier change
An earlier report, quoted in the time zone database, tells of a move the other way. It said clocks would move ahead 60 minutes all over Sudan, as of noon on a Saturday. In the database, that move took Sudan from CAT, UTC+2 to East Africa Time.

Questions about time in Sudan

What time zone is Sudan in?

Sudan is on Central Africa Time, CAT, UTC+2. In the time zone database, Sudan has a single entry, which carries Khartoum's name. Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe show the same time as Sudan. Their clocks stay put too, so the match holds all year.

Does Sudan have daylight saving time?

No. Sudan's clocks stay on CAT, UTC+2 through every month of the year. The time zone database does record summer time in Sudan in past years. In most of those years, its rules put the clocks forward on the last Sunday of April. Those rules stop well before the move to East Africa Time.

Is South Sudan on the same time as Sudan?

Yes. South Sudan is on the same time as Sudan, and neither country moves its clocks. South Sudan is a separate country, with its own entry in the time zone database under Juba. Juba, Yei and Malakal show the same time as Khartoum and Omdurman.

Is Sudan on the same time as Egypt?

Only in Egypt's winter. Cairo then keeps EET, UTC+2, a different code for the same offset as Khartoum. Egypt moves its clocks forward for summer and Sudan does not. While Egypt's summer time runs, Cairo shows EEST, UTC+3, one hour ahead of Khartoum.

What is the time difference between Sudan and Saudi Arabia?

Riyadh is 1 hour ahead of Khartoum. Saudi Arabia and Sudan both keep their clocks fixed, so that hour holds through the year. Kuwait and Yemen show the same time as Riyadh.

What is the time difference between Sudan and the UK?

London is 2 hours behind Khartoum in winter. Britain puts its clocks forward an hour for summer, and Sudan leaves its own alone. During British Summer Time the gap shrinks to one hour, with London still behind.
