Two records of Albania's clocks

The summer period in the AIP
CESTthe clock's code during what the AIP calls the summer period
An aviation document for Albania, the AIP, describes a summer period that comes round every year. It defines that as the part of the year when daylight saving time is in force. The AIP fixes both the start and the end at one o'clock UTC. It names Coordinated Universal Time, with the Gregorian calendar, as its time reference.

Tirana in the time zone database
1 h 19 minTirana's lead on Greenwich under local mean time, by the database
The time zone database begins Tirana on local mean time. That ran a little over an hour and nineteen minutes ahead of Greenwich. Central European Time replaced it in the year the First World War broke out. The database records no clock changes on it until early in the Second World War. From then, the zone follows rules filed under Albania's own name. One of them starts summer time at midnight in early May, not late March. More than forty years on, one July, the database switches Albania to the rule set it names EU. Now Albania's clocks change at the same instants as Italy's and Greece's.

Questions about time in Albania

What time zone is Albania in?

Albania keeps Central European Time, CET, UTC+1, from autumn to spring, and CEST, UTC+2 in summer. Italy, Montenegro and North Macedonia show the same time as Albania all year. Athens, by contrast, sits 1 hour ahead of Tirana whatever the season.

When do the clocks change in Albania?

Clocks in Albania gain an hour on the last Sunday in March, going from two in the morning to three. They lose it again on the final Sunday of October, from three back to two. The AIP gives both Sundays, and the time zone database lists the same ones.

What is the time difference between Albania and the UK?

London runs 1 hour behind Tirana in both summer and winter. The two cities' clock changes coincide to the second, so summer leaves the gap as it was. When a Tirana clock strikes nine, London's reads eight.

What is the time difference between Albania and the US?

Most weeks, Tirana runs 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles. The United States moves its clocks on its own dates, earlier in spring and later in autumn. That leaves Tirana an hour nearer both cities for two or three March weeks, and one week as October ends.
