Serbia's clock, from the bill to the lab

A bill on the calculation of time
Billwhat the government adopted, in its own words
Serbia's government adopted a bill on the calculation of time, according to a statement from its press service. The country needed a law to regulate this area, the statement explains. The bill would give one calculation of time across the territory of the republic. That time would be in line with the time used by European countries. The statement does not say whether the bill became law.

The second and legal time at DMDM
UTC(DMDM)the national time scale, in DMDM's own name for it
Direkcija za mere i dragocene metale, DMDM, has a Group for time and frequency. The group is responsible for realising the second, the SI unit of time. It also performs tasks tied to distributing legal time. DMDM puts Serbia's national time scale, UTC(DMDM), on the internet through NTP, the Network Time Protocol.

From local mean time to EU rules
LMTlocal mean time, the first line of the database's Belgrade entry
The database opens its Belgrade entry on local mean time. Central European Time follows, and the entry gives it no summer time until the Second World War was under way. A later note gives the date of the switch to the rules the file labels EU. The note adds that the change was for all of Yugoslavia at the time.

Questions about time in Serbia

Is Serbia on the same time as Croatia and Hungary?

Yes, in every season. The time zone database files Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia under Belgrade's zone. Hungary has an entry of its own under Budapest, but its clocks show Belgrade's time all year. They go forward and back at the same instant as Serbia's.

Is Serbia on the same time as Romania and Bulgaria?

No. Bucharest and Sofia are 1 hour ahead of Belgrade, winter and summer alike. Romania and Bulgaria keep Eastern European Time, EET, UTC+2, outside summer. Their clocks change on the same Sundays and at the same instant as Serbia's. So eight in the morning in Belgrade is nine in Bucharest and Sofia.

When do the clocks change in Serbia?

Summer time in Serbia begins early on the last Sunday in March, when two o'clock at night becomes three. It ends early on the last Sunday in October, when three o'clock drops back to two. Those Sundays are the ones the time zone database lists for Belgrade.

What is the time difference between Serbia and the UK?

London stays 1 hour behind Belgrade whatever the month. Clocks in Britain and Serbia change together, so summer does not alter the difference. A call set for four in the afternoon in Belgrade rings at three in London.

What is the time difference between Serbia and the US?

For most of the year, New York is 6 hours behind Belgrade and Chicago is 7 hours behind Belgrade. American clocks go forward two or three weeks before Serbian ones. They go back one week after Serbia's. In those weeks, Belgrade's lead over both cities falls by an hour.
