Standard time under the Time Counting Act
CETstandard time in Austria, under section one of the act
Section one of the Time Counting Act names Central European Time as Austria's standard time. In German the act is the Zeitzählungsgesetz. The committee report on the bill gave a second aim as well. It would let the federal government bring in summer time by ordinance.

Summer time set by ordinance
1 hhow far summer time sets clocks ahead of standard time
The act defines summer time as standard time moved one hour ahead. Under its second section, each start and end date comes from a government ordinance. A draft ordinance covers a run of five calendar years. In it, summer time starts at two in the morning and ends at three in the morning. A paper to the Council of Ministers moves that the government adopt the draft.

Summer time comes and goes
Mondaythe weekday summer time ended in the year after the Second World War
Austria first brought in summer time for economic reasons, during and just after the First World War. It applied again from early in the Second World War until three years after it. The time zone database notes that summer time ended on a Monday the year after the war. After a long break, summer time returned in agreement with the other European states of the Council of Europe. Since Austria joined the European Union, binding EU rules have governed it.

Who keeps Austria's legal time
BEVits master clock is the national standard for Austria's time scale
BEV, the Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen, lists realising the legally binding Austrian standard time among its tasks. A caesium frequency standard serves as its master clock. That clock is the national standard for UTC(BEV), the national Austrian time scale. BEV's other atomic clocks are for backup, internal comparisons and calibration.

Questions about time in Austria

What time zone is Austria in?

Austria keeps Central European Time, CET, UTC+1, in the winter months. In summer it switches to Central European Summer Time, CEST, UTC+2. A federal act makes Central European Time the standard time. Vienna's clock is the clock for the whole country.

When do the clocks change in Austria?

In Austria, summer time begins on the last Sunday in March, when clocks jump an hour ahead. It finishes on the last Sunday in October, and clocks fall back an hour. An EU directive fixes both Sundays for every member state. The change comes at the same Greenwich hour everywhere in the Union.

Will Austria stop changing its clocks?

Not for now. The European Commission proposed ending seasonal time changes throughout the EU. Each member state would still choose its own standard time. The European Parliament supported a stop to the changes. The Council has not yet finalised its position, so Austria still moves its clocks twice a year.

What is the time difference between Austria and the UK?

London is 1 hour behind Vienna in every season. Britain changes its clocks at the very moment Austria does, so that single hour holds. Nine in the morning in Vienna is eight in the morning in London.

What is the time difference between Austria and the US?

New York is 6 hours behind Vienna for most of the year. Los Angeles is 9 hours behind Vienna over the same months. New York and Los Angeles spring forward two or three weeks before Austria, and fall back a week after. In those short spells each gap is one hour smaller.
