How Hungary keeps its time
- Hungary's copy of world time
- BFKH
- The Government Office of the Capital City of Budapest, BFKH, looks after Hungary's national measurement standards. Its metrology department keeps Hungary's own copy of world time. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures compares that copy with world time and publishes the gap.
- Summer time by decree
- nyári időszámítás
- A government decree sets summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Hungarians call it nyári időszámítás, and standard time téli időszámítás, winter time. The whole European Union changes its clocks at the same instant.
- The hour that came twice
- A, B
- In the First World War, one hour of the night came twice when the clocks went back. A decree from the interior minister told registrars to mark the first with A and the second with B. That avoided mistakes in the records of births and deaths.
- Summer time on and off
- 1 h
- Hungary already kept Central European time before the First World War, and first moved its clocks in that war. In the Second World War it kept summer time through a whole winter. Summer time then came and went, and has been yearly since the early eighties.
- Ending the clock change, on hold
- Blocked
- The European Parliament voted to end the twice-yearly clock change. The member states have not agreed, so the proposal is blocked in the Council. Hungary still changes its clocks twice a year.
