Questions about time in Indonesia

How many time zones does Indonesia have?

Three. Western Indonesia Time, WIB, UTC+7, covers Sumatra, Java, and West and Central Kalimantan. Central Indonesia Time, WITA, UTC+8, covers the rest of Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi. Eastern Indonesia Time, WIT, UTC+9, covers Maluku and Papua. A presidential decree sets the three zones, and the clocks do not change.

What time zone is Jakarta in?

Jakarta keeps Western Indonesia Time, WIB, UTC+7, all year. Java and Sumatra share it, so Surabaya, Bandung and Medan show the same time. So does Pontianak, on Borneo. WIB is short for Waktu Indonesia Barat, the decree's name for the zone. Bali, 1 hour ahead of Jakarta, is on Central time.

What time zone is Bali in?

Bali keeps Central Indonesia Time, WITA, UTC+8, 1 hour ahead of Jakarta. Makassar, Balikpapan and both Nusa Tenggara provinces share it. Singapore and Perth show the same time as Bali all year, as none of them changes clocks. Sydney is 2 hours ahead of Bali in the Australian winter, and an hour more in summer.

What is the Asia/Jayapura time zone?

Asia/Jayapura is the time zone database's name for Eastern Indonesia Time, WIT, UTC+9. It covers Maluku, North Maluku and the provinces of Papua. Its cities include Jayapura, Ambon, Sorong and Ternate. It is 2 hours ahead of Jakarta all year. The decree calls it Waktu Indonesia Timur.

Why do Jakarta and Pontianak have separate zone names?

The time zone database lists four Indonesian zones for three times. They are Asia/Jakarta, Asia/Pontianak, Asia/Makassar and Asia/Jayapura. Jakarta and Pontianak both show WIB, UTC+7. The database keeps them apart because their past differs. It records Pontianak on Central time until the decree took effect. This page shows the two in one row.

What is the time difference between Indonesia and India?

Jakarta is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of India. Bali is 2 hours 30 minutes ahead of India, and Jayapura 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India. Neither country changes its clocks, so these gaps do not move. India keeps one time zone, so Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru share each gap.
