How Malaysia keeps its time
- One clock for peninsula and Borneo
- 30 min
- Peninsular Malaysia once ran half an hour behind Sabah and Sarawak. The change came just before midnight, at the end of one year in the early eighties. People on the peninsula moved their clocks forward by half an hour. The country has kept one time since. The prime minister told Parliament the gap had caused disputes over working hours.
- An hour ahead of the sun
- 1 h
- By its longitude, the peninsula would keep a time an hour behind the one it uses. One member of Parliament pointed this out in the debate. The shared clock puts sunrise on the peninsula at around seven in the morning. Kota Kinabalu, far to the east, sees the sun rise much earlier.
- The official time
- NMIM
- The National Metrology Institute of Malaysia, part of SIRIM, establishes, maintains and sends out Malaysian Standard Time. It has been the national timekeeper by Cabinet appointment since the early nineties. Its caesium atomic clocks keep time to within one second in sixty thousand years.
- In step with Singapore

- Singapore changed its clocks on the same day as the peninsula. So Kuala Lumpur and Singapore still share one time. Under the Japanese occupation, Malaya was put on Tokyo time, an hour and a half ahead of Malayan time.
