The law, the regulation and the lab
- Standard time in the measurement act
- 1 h
- Section six of the Lov om målenheter, måling og normaltid sets Norway's standard time. The act calls that time normaltiden. It places normaltiden one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The same section lets the King set a different standard time for particular seasons.
- A summer-time regulation tied to the EEA
- 60 min
- Summer time comes from a separate text, the Forskrift om sommertid. It defines summer time as the part of the year when clocks run one hour forward. The regulation names the EEA Agreement and a European directive among its references. Justervesenet says the switching times are common to the EEA countries.
- Atomic clocks at Justervesenet
- 5 days
- Justervesenet runs a national laboratory with several atomic clocks. It takes part in the international system that sets the world's time. Every fifth day it sends time signals from its clocks to the BIPM in Paris. The BIPM computes the global time scale, Coordinated Universal Time. Justervesenet also offers NTP services and calibration work.
Questions about time in Norway
What time zone is Norway in?
Norway uses Central European Time, CET, UTC+1, between the October and March changes. Its summer clocks show Central European Summer Time, CEST, UTC+2. The time zone database gives the country one zone. A clock in Oslo therefore stands for every Norwegian town on the mainland.
When do the clocks change in Norway?
On the last Sunday in March, Norwegian clocks jump from two in the morning straight to three. On the last Sunday in October, three in the morning turns back into two. Justervesenet says Norway has kept summer time every year since late in the twentieth century.
Does Svalbard keep the same time as mainland Norway?
Yes. The time zone database puts Longyearbyen, on Svalbard, in the same zone as Oslo. Jan Mayen is filed under that zone as well. The summer-time regulation is made under Norway's acts on Svalbard and Jan Mayen too. This site also has a page of its own for Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
What is the time difference between Norway and the UK?
London keeps a clock 1 hour behind Oslo's in every month. British spring and autumn changes fall at the same Universal Time instant as Norway's. A video call set for nine in Oslo opens at eight in London.
What is the time difference between Norway and the US?
For most of the year, Oslo reads 6 hours ahead of New York. Chicago sits 7 hours behind Oslo for most of the year too. Both American cities change their clocks on other Sundays. Their spring change comes two or three weeks before Norway's, and their autumn change one week after. In those weeks each figure is one hour smaller.
