Taiwan's standard time and its record
- The national time laboratory
- Over 50 years
- The National Time and Frequency Standard Laboratory aims to keep the highest national standards for time and frequency. Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories runs it, as the executing agency its home page names. The laboratory's overview cites Article 8 of the Metrology Act, and Article 20 of its Enforcement Rules, for that role. The overview says the institute has kept the national time and frequency standards for more than fifty years.
- Checked against Coordinated Universal Time
- ±30 ns
- A working document on the BIPM site says TL is responsible for Taiwan's time and frequency standard. It compares UTC(TL), TL's time scale, with Coordinated Universal Time. For the period it covers, it reports the phase difference between the two was kept within 30 nanoseconds.
- From mean time to an hour ahead
- +1 h
- The tz database starts Taiwan on local mean time, six minutes ahead of today's CST, UTC+8. It ends that mean time late in the nineteenth century. Nearly forty-two years later, the database moves Taipei an hour ahead of today's offset. That is the offset Tokyo keeps now. Taipei stayed on it for nearly eight years. The entry ends a few weeks after the Second World War ended.
- Summer time in the tz record
- 3 months
- The year after Taipei left that offset, the tz database gives Taiwan summer time. It ran from mid-May to the end of September. Its rules bring summer time back in several later years. The latest rule, thirty-three years after that spell, ran from the start of July to the end of September. It put the clocks forward an hour, for that one year only.
Questions about time in Taiwan
What time zone is Taiwan in?
Taiwan is on CST, UTC+8, and a single zone covers all of it. The tz database files that zone as Asia/Taipei. Taipei, New Taipei City, Taichung and Kaohsiung show the same time.
Does Taiwan have daylight saving time?
No. Taiwan holds CST, UTC+8 through the year. The tz database records summer time in past years, but none for Taiwan in the years ahead. A gap with Taiwan shifts only on the other place's own change days, such as the American and European ones.
Is Taiwan on the same time as Hong Kong and Shanghai?
Yes. Clocks in Taipei, Hong Kong and Shanghai agree to the minute in January and in July. Each place keeps one offset through the year, so they stay level. Manila and Singapore are level with them as well. Tokyo and Seoul run 1 hour ahead of Taipei in every season.
What is the time difference between Taiwan and the US?
In the American winter, New York is 13 hours behind Taipei. Los Angeles is 16 hours behind Taipei in those same winter months. From March to early November, American daylight time cuts an hour off both gaps. When Taipei starts work at nine, New York is still on the evening before.
What is the time difference between Taiwan and the UK?
London is 8 hours behind Taipei while Britain is on winter time. Britain's summer clocks, from late March to late October, bring London an hour nearer to Taipei. A call at four in the afternoon in Taipei reaches London in its morning, in either season.
