How Queensland sets its clock

One state law, one time
AESTthroughout Queensland, under the Standard Time Act
Queensland sets its clock by its own Standard Time Act. The Act fixes the state's standard time at AEST, UTC+10. It declares that time to be standard time throughout Queensland. The Act took effect more than a century ago. Before it, the tz database shows Brisbane on its own local mean time.

Daylight saving laws, and a repeal bill
Failedthe state referendum on daylight saving, in Parliament's own record
Queensland has made daylight saving laws of its own in the past. One Act put the clocks forward from late October to late February, for a single summer. A later Act brought daylight saving back for one more summer, from late October to early March. The Parliamentary Library notes that three years of daylight saving came before the referendum. Parliament's record lists that referendum as failed. A repeal bill removed the daylight saving legislation. The tz database's own Queensland rules cover those summers.

The south-east asks, the government answers
4395-26the e-petition the Attorney-General answered
South East Queensland has its own place in the debate. An earlier private member's bill sought a referendum on split-zone daylight saving for the south-east. The government of the day said it would vote against it. Later, e-petition 4395-26 asked Parliament for a new referendum on daylight saving in Queensland. As an alternative, it proposed a trial of a dual time zone, with daylight saving in the south-east only. The Attorney-General's tabled response says time-zone reform "is not currently under consideration by the Government". The petition was a request and the response states current policy. Neither changes the law.

Questions about Brisbane time

What time is it in Brisbane now?

Brisbane time now is the reading on this page's flip clock, which ticks every second. Brisbane keeps AEST, UTC+10 in every month, because Queensland does not change its clocks. The Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Logan City show exactly the same time as Brisbane.

Does Queensland have daylight saving?

No. Queensland keeps AEST, UTC+10 in summer and winter, so its clocks do not go forward for summer. The state ran daylight saving in some past summers and held a referendum on it. A repeal bill removed that law. The government says time-zone reform is not currently under consideration.

What is the time difference between Brisbane and India?

Brisbane is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of India all year. India has no summer time either, so nothing shifts that figure. The same goes for two Asian business hubs. Brisbane is 1 hour ahead of Tokyo and 2 hours ahead of Singapore through the year.

Is all of Queensland on Brisbane time?

Yes. The Standard Time Act declares one standard time throughout Queensland. The tz database does list the Whitsunday Islands under a separate entry, Australia/Lindeman. That entry shows the same time as Brisbane in every season, with no clock changes.
