How Perth keeps its clock

No daylight saving, so the Sydney gap moves
AWSTin every month, with no daylight code to switch to
Western Australia keeps standard time through the year. So every gap with a place that changes its clocks moves twice a year. Sydney is 2 hours ahead of Perth in winter and three hours ahead in summer. London is 8 hours behind Perth in the British winter and seven hours behind in the British summer. New York is 13 hours behind Perth in the American winter and twelve hours behind in its summer.

Eucla's unofficial time
UTC+8:45kept along the Nullarbor around Eucla, without official standing
A strip of the Nullarbor about 340 kilometres long keeps its own time, UTC+8:45. It runs 45 minutes ahead of Perth and does not change with the seasons. It is not officially recognised. ABC News reported that mobile phones did not pick it up automatically. Its roadhouse communities include Cocklebiddy, Madura, Eucla and Border Village. Its clocks have run apart from Perth's for decades. So the tz database gives it an entry of its own, Australia/Eucla.

One offset with Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing
0 hfrom Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing in every season
Perth shares its offset with three big Asian cities. Singapore keeps SGT, UTC+8. Hong Kong keeps HKT, UTC+8. Beijing keeps CST, UTC+8. None of them change their clocks, so Perth is on the same time as Singapore in every season. Tokyo is 1 hour ahead of Perth, and that gap does not move either.
Four referendums, four votes against
54.6%of the vote against daylight saving at the latest referendum
Western Australians have voted on daylight saving at four referendums. Each time the majority said no. Every vote came after a summer or more of daylight saving. The latest followed a three-summer trial under the Daylight Saving Act, which also required the vote. At that referendum 624,304 electors said no and 519,899 said yes. The clocks have stayed on standard time since.

Questions about Australian Western Time

What time is it in Perth right now?

The live clock here shows Perth time now, second by second. Perth keeps AWST, UTC+8 in every month of the year, because Western Australia has no daylight saving. Mandurah, Bunbury and Geraldton show the same time as Perth.

What is AWST time?

AWST is the code for Western Standard Time, the time Perth keeps all year. Western Australia first set its clocks by the mean time of the 120th meridian east of Greenwich. Its current Standard Time Act defines the same time by reference to Coordinated Universal Time. There is no daylight code, because the clocks do not move for summer.

Does Perth have daylight saving time?

No. Western Australia stays on standard time through the year, so Perth's clocks do not change. Voters have rejected daylight saving at four state referendums, most recently by 54.6% to 45.4%. That vote followed a three-summer trial. With no clock change, Perth sits three hours behind Sydney in summer, not two.

What is the time difference between Perth and Sydney?

Sydney is 2 hours ahead of Perth in winter, when both cities keep standard time. In summer Sydney puts its clocks forward and Perth does not, so the gap widens to three hours. Melbourne and Canberra keep Sydney's time, so the same figures apply to them. Brisbane leaves its clocks alone, so it stays 2 hours ahead of Perth.

Is all of Western Australia on Perth time?

Nearly all of it. The Standard Time Act sets one time for the whole state. The exception is a strip of the Nullarbor around Eucla. Its roadhouses keep UTC+8:45, 45 minutes ahead of Perth, without official standing. The tz database lists it as Australia/Eucla, so it has a page of its own here.
