How Colombia keeps its time

The legal time
INMgenerates and spreads Colombia's legal time
Colombia's official time is called the legal time, la hora legal colombiana. A decree gives the Instituto Nacional de Metrología the job of generating, monitoring and spreading it. A caesium atomic clock generates it, and the institute's website and two internet time servers carry it. The job passed to the institute from the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce.

No letter code
UTC-5what this site shows instead of a code
The institute writes Colombia's legal time as an offset, UTC-5, with no letter code. The time zone database also uses numbers for South America, after dropping codes it called invented. So this site shows the offset, and calls the zone Colombia Time in plain English.

During a power crisis, President César Gaviria's government put the clocks forward one hour. It was the first time Colombia put its clocks forward. The aim was to save electricity by using more daylight. The clocks went back the next year, and they have not changed since.
