Romanian time in law, the lab and the records
- An ordinance on summer time
- EEST
- Romania's government issued an ordinance on summer time. Its title speaks of establishing a summer timetable and official summer time on Romanian territory. The clock-change dates on this page come from the time zone database, which gives Romania its EU rules.
- A repeal proposal in the Senate
- Rejected
- A legislative proposal set out to repeal the summer time ordinance. The Senate rejected it, according to the Senate's own record. That record gives the proposal's status as sent to the Chamber for debate.
- Date and time at the metrology institute
- Timp-Frecventa
- Institutul Naţional de Metrologie has a time and frequency group, Colectivul Timp-Frecventa. It sits in the laboratory for electromagnetic quantities. Among the group's activities and services, the institute's page lists providing the national reference for disseminating date and time information.
- Bucharest mean time and later rules
- BMT
- The time zone database records a Bucharest mean time, which it ends between the two world wars. Its Romanian rules add summer time each year from the following year to the end of the thirties. They list summer time again in the late seventies. A database note assumes that Romania switched to EU rules in the late nineties.
Questions about time in Romania
Is Romania on the same time as Bulgaria and Greece?
Yes. Clocks in Sofia and Athens read exactly what Bucharest's read, winter and summer. Bulgaria and Greece move their clocks at the very instant Romania does. Istanbul differs only in winter, when it is 1 hour ahead of Bucharest, as Turkey does not change its clocks.
When do the clocks change in Romania?
On the final Sunday of March, Romanian clocks move an hour forward in the early morning. On the final Sunday of October, they move that hour back, again in the early morning. The section on clock changes, higher up this page, gives the next date.
Will Romania stop changing its clocks?
Not for now. The European Commission proposed a directive to end seasonal changes of time. The European Parliament's tracker reports no further progress on it in the Council. After talks started by the Polish presidency, the Commission chose to run a detailed study. The time zone database still gives Romania two clock changes a year.
What is the time difference between Romania and the UK?
London is 2 hours behind Bucharest in every season. The UK and Romania change their clocks together, so summer leaves this difference alone. Rome and Madrid sit between the two, 1 hour behind Bucharest all year.
What is the time difference between Romania and the US?
New York is 7 hours behind Bucharest for most of the year, with Toronto on New York's clock. New York's summer time starts a few weeks before Romania's, in March. In autumn it runs on for a week after Romania's ends. During both spells, New York sits an hour closer to Bucharest.
