What sets Adak apart on Hawaii-Aleutian time

The dividing meridian
169.5° Wthe longitude where Alaska time ends and Hawaii-Aleutian time begins
The regulation draws the line at 169 degrees 30 minutes west longitude. Islands west of it keep Hawaii-Aleutian time. The rest of Alaska, including the eastern Aleutians, keeps Alaska time. Adak sits about seven degrees west of the line. Unalaska sits about three degrees east of it, on Alaska time.

+1 hahead of Honolulu in summer, level in winter
Adak and Honolulu share the same standard time, HST, UTC-10. Through the winter their clocks read the same. In summer Adak moves to HDT, UTC-9 and Honolulu does not move. So Adak runs one hour ahead of Honolulu in summer. The gap opens on the second Sunday in March and closes on the first Sunday in November.

Why Adak has its own entry
2database entries in the Hawaii-Aleutian zone, Honolulu and Adak
The time zone database merges places into one entry only when their clocks have agreed since its fixed cut-off point. Hawaii and the western Aleutians share a legal zone but not a clock. Hawaii stays on standard time while Adak changes twice a year. So the database holds one entry for Honolulu and another for Adak.

From Nome time to Hawaii-Aleutian time
4 to 2time zones in Alaska, before and after the consolidation
Adak has kept several clocks. It began on local mean time. It then kept an unofficial Nome time, and later Bering time, each an hour behind the present winter time. When Alaska cut its four time zones to two, Adak moved forward an hour. It kept Alaska-Hawaii time for a month, then the zone took its present name.

Questions about Hawaii-Aleutian Time

What time is it in Adak now?

The live clock at the top of this page shows Adak time now, to the second. Adak keeps HST, UTC-10 in winter and HDT, UTC-9 in summer. The clocks change on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. The rest of Alaska changes on the same days.

Is Adak on the same time as Hawaii?

In winter, yes. Adak and Honolulu both keep HST, UTC-10 from early November to early March. In summer Adak moves its clocks forward and Hawaii does not. Adak then runs one hour ahead of Honolulu until the clocks go back in November.

What is the time difference between Adak and Anchorage?

Anchorage is 1 hour ahead of Adak all year. Both change their clocks on the same nights, so the gap holds in winter and summer. Los Angeles is 2 hours ahead of Adak, and New York is 5 hours ahead of it. Those gaps hold all year too, since all four places change clocks on the US dates.

Does Hawaii-Aleutian time have daylight saving time?

Only in its Alaskan part. The federal rule advances every zone's clocks for part of the year unless a state exempts itself. Hawaii does not observe it, so Honolulu stays on HST, UTC-10 through the year. Alaska does observe it, so Adak and the western Aleutians move to HDT, UTC-9 each summer.

Which part of Alaska is on Hawaii-Aleutian time?

Only the Aleutian Islands west of 169 degrees 30 minutes west longitude. Adak lies on that side of the line, about seven degrees west of it. Unalaska lies east of the line and keeps Alaska time with Anchorage. For every state's zone, including the split states, see this site's page on US time zones by state.
