How Alaska keeps its time

Six entries, one clock: 6time zone database entries for Alaska, all on one clock now; The time zone database lists six entries for Alaska outside the far western Aleutians. They are Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka, Metlakatla, Yakutat and Nome. All six keep the same time now. The database gives one name to every region whose clocks have agreed since the start of the seventies. Alaska once had four time zones, and these towns kept different ones. Juneau, Sitka and Metlakatla kept Pacific time. Yakutat kept Yukon time and Nome kept Bering time. Before the merge, Anchorage shared Hawaii's standard hour. Metlakatla, the late joiner: AKSTin Metlakatla in winter, the same code as Anchorage; Metlakatla, on Annette Island, joined Alaska Time more than thirty years after Juneau and Sitka. When Alaska's zones were merged, its community council voted to stay on Pacific time. The island kept that time all year and did not change its clocks. It later moved to Alaska time and began changing its clocks with the state. It then spent part of one winter back on Pacific time. The western Aleutians: HSTin Adak and the islands west of the federal line; The Aleutian Islands west of 169 degrees 30 minutes west keep Hawaii-Aleutian time, not Alaska Time. The federal regulation draws that line. Adak is the place the time zone database names for these islands. It keeps HST, UTC-10 in winter and HDT, UTC-9 in summer, 1 hour behind Anchorage. What do AKST and AKDT mean?

AKST stands for Alaska Standard Time, the winter clock. AKDT is the daylight saving code used in summer. The zone runs at AKST, UTC-9 in winter and AKDT, UTC-8 in summer. Federal law names the zone Alaska standard time but gives no abbreviations. The codes come from the time zone database, which took them from the US Naval Observatory.

Does Alaska change its clocks for daylight saving time?

Yes. Alaska moves its clocks forward one hour on the second Sunday in March. They go back on the first Sunday in November. The Uniform Time Act sets both days. Winter is AKST, UTC-9 and summer is AKDT, UTC-8. The western Aleutians change their clocks on the same days. Hawaii, which shares their zone, does not.

They share Hawaii's standard time but change their clocks with Alaska. So they stay 1 hour behind Anchorage through the year.
