What sets Hawaii's clock apart

Standard time in every season
0clock changes a year in Hawaii
Hawaii stays on standard time through the year. Federal law lets a state inside one zone exempt itself from daylight saving. Hawaii does not observe it. So the gap with the mainland moves twice a year.

One code, two spellings
HSTas the tz database and this clock print it
The tz database prints HST for Hawaii, and so does this clock. Its North America file calls that the standardized abbreviation for Hawaii-Aleutian standard time. Unicode's locale data spells the short form HAST. Both mean the same clock, HST, UTC-10.

The Aleutians share the zone and change clocks
HDTthe summer code in Adak, which Hawaii does not use
The regulation draws the zone to take in the Aleutian Islands west of 169.5 degrees west longitude. Adak keeps HST, UTC-10 in winter and HDT, UTC-9 in summer, changing on the same days as the mainland. Honolulu and Adak show the same time in winter and an hour apart in summer. Their clocks have not agreed since the start of the seventies, so the tz database keeps two entries. Adak has its own page on this site.

Daylight time came and went
half an hourthe post-war shift that set the present offset
Hawaii's legislature first tried daylight saving in the thirties. The Legislature decreed it for the summer months and repealed the act less than a month later. During the Second World War the clocks stayed on daylight time all year. After the war the standard clock moved by half an hour to its present offset, HST, UTC-10. Since then Hawaii has stayed on standard time.

Questions about Hawaii-Aleutian Time

What time is it in Hawaii now?

The live clock at the top of this page shows Hawaii time now, to the second. Honolulu, Pearl City and every other town in the state keep the same clock, HST, UTC-10. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving, so the clock does not change in spring or autumn.

What does HST stand for?

HST is the tz database's code for Hawaii-Aleutian standard time. The regulation names the zone, and the database supplies the letters. Hawaii keeps that code in every month, because it has no daylight time. Adak, in the Aleutians, switches to HDT each summer. Unicode's locale data lists HAST as the short form instead.

Does Hawaii have daylight saving time?

No. Hawaii keeps standard time, HST, UTC-10, in summer and winter alike. NIST lists Hawaii among the places that do not observe daylight saving. The Aleutian part of the same zone does change its clocks. For the zone of any other state, see this site's state lookup page.

What is the time difference between Hawaii and California?

Los Angeles is 2 hours ahead of Hawaii in winter. In summer the gap grows by one hour, because California moves its clocks forward and Hawaii does not. The mainland changes on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. Hawaii's clock stays where it is on both days.

What is the time difference between Hawaii and New York?

New York is 5 hours ahead of Hawaii in winter and one hour more in summer. Chicago is 4 hours ahead of Hawaii in winter, and Denver is 3 hours ahead of it. Each gap grows by one hour in summer, when the mainland moves its clocks. Hawaii's own clock plays no part in the change.
