Where Mountain Time differs
- Arizona and the Navajo Nation
- MST
- Arizona lies in the Mountain zone but rejects daylight saving time by state law. So Phoenix and Tucson keep MST, UTC-7 all year. In summer that puts them level with Los Angeles. The Navajo Nation does change its clocks. It does so to keep one time with its communities in Utah and New Mexico.
- Southern Idaho and eastern Oregon
- MST
- The Salmon River splits Idaho between two time zones. South of it, Boise, Pocatello and Idaho Falls keep Mountain Time. North of it, Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston keep Pacific Time. Most of Malheur County in Oregon, around Ontario, keeps Mountain Time too. The tz database lists southern Idaho and Malheur County under a Boise entry of their own. Their clocks once changed four weeks later than Denver's. That one difference earns a region its own entry.
- The split states on the Central line
- 5
- Five states straddle the line between Central and Mountain Time. In Nebraska the west, around Scottsbluff and Ogallala, keeps Mountain Time. In Kansas only Sherman, Wallace, Greeley and Hamilton counties do, on the Colorado border. In North Dakota it is the southwest, and in South Dakota the west, including Rapid City. In Texas, El Paso and Hudspeth counties keep Mountain Time with New Mexico. Every town on the line itself keeps Mountain Time, except Murdo in South Dakota.
- One zone, three tz entries
- 3
- The tz database gives the Mountain zone three entries. Phoenix covers Arizona outside the Navajo Nation, where the clocks stay put all year. Boise covers southern Idaho and most of Malheur County, Oregon, for their one late change. Denver covers the rest, Navajo Nation included. An entry is not a legal zone. It is a region whose clocks have agreed since the start of the seventies. So this page, the Phoenix page and the Boise page each carry their own clock.
