Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces, Newfoundland and most of Nunavut change their clocks on the dates below. British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and most of Saskatchewan keep one time all year. Where the rules differ in Canada
- British Columbia's last change
- 0
- British Columbia made its final clock change in the spring. It now keeps what it calls Pacific time all year. That is the summer offset it used to switch to. Northeastern BC, around the Peace River, stays on Mountain Standard Time. The East Kootenay region keeps Mountain daylight time year round.
- Alberta Time
- ABT
- Alberta no longer sets its clocks back in November. It calls the result Alberta Time, abbreviated ABT. That is one hour ahead of its old Mountain Standard Time. Lloydminster, which straddles the Saskatchewan border, has long kept Alberta's clock.
- Saskatchewan and Yukon
- CST
- Most of Saskatchewan keeps Central Standard Time all year, the same time Alberta has now chosen. Yukon moved first among the territories. It keeps Yukon Standard Time, MST, UTC-7, all year round.
- Newfoundland's half hour

- Newfoundland keeps its own zone, NST, UTC-3:30, half an hour ahead of the Maritimes. It changes its clocks with eastern Canada. In eastern Quebec, areas east of 63° west use Atlantic time for all or part of the year.

How many time zones does Canada have?
The National Research Council, Canada's official timekeeper, describes six time zones: Newfoundland, Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific. Several provinces now keep one time all year. So Canada's clocks show five different times in winter and six in summer. The table above groups places by the time they actually keep.
Which parts of Canada do not change their clocks?
British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Yukon and most of Saskatchewan keep one time all year. So does Southampton Island in Nunavut. The Northwest Territories have made the same change. The rest of Canada moves its clocks forward in March and back in November. It changes on the same days as the United States.
Is Vancouver on the same time as Calgary?
No. Calgary is 1 hour ahead of Vancouver. Both provinces now keep one time all year. Before, both changed their clocks on the same days. So the gap was one hour then too. Edmonton keeps the same time as Calgary.
What time zone is Toronto in?
Toronto keeps Eastern Time, the same as New York. It is EST, UTC-5 in winter and EDT, UTC-4 in summer. Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City share it. Canada's official time comes from the atomic clocks of the National Research Council, the country's timekeeper.
What is the time difference between Canada and the UK?
Toronto is 5 hours behind London for most of the year. The gap is an hour smaller for a few weeks in March and for one week in autumn. That is because Canada and the UK change their clocks on different Sundays. St. John's, Newfoundland, is only 3 hours 30 minutes behind London in winter.
